March 14, 2025 – Doddridge County Schools launched the Bulldogs in the Buildings attendance initiative in the fall of 2024, creating a variety of county and school-level events to encourage student attendance throughout the academic year. The initiative emphasizes the connection between consistent attendance and student achievement.
Regular attendance is not just about being physically present; it’s a key factor in academic success, personal growth, and long-term opportunity. Students who attend school consistently acquire the knowledge, skills, and habits that set them up for success in life. In contrast, truancy disrupts the learning process, often leading to poorer academic outcomes and diminished future opportunities.
Throughout the year, Doddridge County Schools has implemented a range of fun and engaging attendance incentives. At Doddridge County Early Learning Academy, students are surprised with small prizes on random days, and classes with 95% or better attendance each day earn pups and the class with the most pups each month earn a class prize. At Doddridge County Middle and High School, students who miss 5% or fewer days are entered into a monthly raffle with exciting prizes. Doddridge County Elementary School adds a special touch by inviting a surprise guest each month to treat students who are present.
Today, Doddridge County Elementary School students were greeted with an exciting surprise. This month’s guest, Skittles the Leprechaun, brought his pot of gold to wish students good luck as they prepared for their MAP testing. Skittles handed out gold coins to the students, spreading cheer and encouragement, and danced with the students as they clapped along. His lively visit was just the latest in a series of fun events designed to reward students for good attendance and to keep them engaged in their schoolwork.
“We wanted to make today special for our students as they head into their MAP testing,” said Rosella Amos, Doddridge County Elementary School Principal. “Skittles the Leprechaun’s visit is just one way we’re showing how much we appreciate our students’ attendance and their hard work.”
The Bulldogs in the Buildings initiative is part of the district’s continued efforts to stress the importance of regular school attendance. Past surprises have included visits from Santa and The Great Pumpkin, with more exciting events planned throughout the year to keep students motivated and eager to attend school.
“We are so grateful for the energy and enthusiasm that Skittles brought today,” said Superintendent Cochran. “It’s these kinds of fun, unexpected moments that help make school something students look forward to every day.”
Chris Cress, Director of Student Services, added, “We’ve seen an overall improvement in our attendance numbers this year, thanks to these initiatives. Attendance is the foundation of academic and personal success. Every missed school day represents a lost opportunity for learning, growth, and connection.”
Chad Evans, Board President, also emphasized the importance of these efforts: “The Bulldogs in the Buildings initiative shows our commitment to not only improving attendance but creating a positive, engaging environment where students are excited to come to school. By celebrating their dedication to learning, we are building a strong foundation for their future success.”
While truancy presents challenges, it is a problem that can be addressed through collaboration between families, schools, and communities. By prioritizing attendance, Doddridge County Schools is working to ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
